Formula Challenge (15/08/2004)
Options: (Print) (Send)
It's the first true Formula One arcade racer we've seen for ages!
Arcade machines; you have to love them! Eating up your spare change like there’s no tomorrow – “please insert another pound” or “time's up” are just a few of the messages that might appear on the screen when you’re in the middle of a match. Arcade machines always seem to intensely difficult too – and there’s never an option to turn the heat down – it's extreme difficulty all the way.

If you’ve ever looked in an exchange and mart magazine you’ll know that arcade machines cost a pretty penny. But for arcade goodness you don’t have to look any further than Formula Challenge on your very own Playstation 2. It’s fast, simple, and fun – the three main ingredients that any good game should sport.

Formula Challenge has two core modes – a basic quick race arcade mode, or a Championship mode. They both consist of the same things; except the quick race is obviously a much faster, pick up and play style race. Formula Challenge will let you choose from a few options before dumping you onto the race track. Pick from ten tracks, tens cars and you're pretty much ready to race, with or without a friend. Obviously racing with a friend intensifies the arcade experience – but the single player is just as effective.

Formula Challenge is generally an easy game - almost anybody can pick this game up and play. And the nature of the controls makes this very easy – especially if you’ve got the automatic gearbox selected. You can become a professional racer in a few minutes – so you’ll find yourself turning up the difficulty level every so often to give you a bit more of a challenge. If you don’t like formula one racing games then there’s no need to worry – because at times it doesn’t even feel like you’re playing one! It just feels like a fast arcade game that’s busted out of the boozer onto your Playstation 2. And if you don’t like the long look of the formula one car then just put it in first person view – so it feels like you’re in the driver’s seat – and gives you even more of an arcade kick!

In the Championship mode the computer will give you the challenge that you’re after – opponents out smart you, and if you’re not careful – overtake you at the drop of a hat. The sounds in this game are quite good too – lovely engine noises that will please even the most hard to please Formula One enthusiast!

Graphically is where the game lacks – but I’ve never seen a graphically rich arcade game – so it doesn’t really matter for this type of genre.

At a highly affordable price this game will satisfy your racing needs as and when you get the urge. It only has ten tracks – but the pick up and play nature cancels this factor out. Whether you’re an arcade enthusiast, a Formula One devotee or somebody with a yearning for a race then Formula Challenge is the game for you. It’s great to play on your own, and even better to play with a friend and a bottle of Becks – for the true authentic arcade experience. And for the price of a few goes down your local pub you might as well own it! RP
