Final Fantasy X (24/02/2004)
Options: (Print) (Send)
True to the Final Fantasy legacy, or did Square mess it up?

Graphics

Do graphics matter in an RPG? I suppose not, as most people still think the greatest of all time are the RPGs of old. But, nonetheless, those at Square Enix didn’t hold back. The cinematic scenes between Yuna and Tidus are nothing less than amazing; graphically and cinematically. The in-game settings and locales are vibrant with colour but there isn’t really anything you will find groundbreaking here. The structure of the world you get to play in is breathtaking, and makes you want to come back for more. From the buildings to the people and creatures you encounter, it makes things a lot less dull than you may imagine.

Sound

The sound quality fits in with all the other parts of this sensational game. Nobuo Uematsu knows how to produce such a sweetly conducted soundtrack that sets itself out purely by itself. The regular sounds are by no means bad, but definitely not something you would find truly amazing. Your battles and some certain tunes can, although, get rather repetitive. The voice-overs aren’t too bad, but the lip sync isn’t up to par at all, which isn’t a big part but definitely has an effect. I mean, at least their faces have emotion to them.

Gameplay

Such a game as Final Fantasy is, to live up to the franchises legacy, it meets them, and with high demand. People had been waiting, worldwide, for this one to hit stores, and when it did it sold tons of copies. But, what did people have to look forward to in the continuation of the series? Well, for one, this game had a sweetly crafted battle system. Not timed, but this had it’s way of blending in a lot more strategy that isn’t possible with a timed battle system. And, with summoning Aeons available, the battle could have many outcomes.

One of the biggest changes, within FFX, was the Sphere Grid. It takes some getting used to, but once learned, it is a useful tool, and very much one of the most innovative parts of FFX. And the well-crafted story has you pitted in an adventure around a world called Spira, and the story passed through the world so smoothly it made it feel as though you were really a part of the game. That, alone, added so much more FFX. The puzzle solving wasn’t too extreme unless you went beyond the games requirements. And the mini-games available make the game a bit more interesting, especially Blitzball.

Story

The story is Final Fantasy quality, and truly brilliant. Everyone can’t possibly believe this one will surpass all it’s predecessors but to some it did. The FF series is known, and so is its following, and they came to see another day, because this game was nothing under marvellous. The character development throughout the story portrayed true depth within it all. Although, with such a long story, you may get drawn into it, or some may get turned away.

Specifically, this games strong point is its story, and how it draws you into it. Everything put together, it definitely has ups and downs, but it can’t be disregarded as a lack of. And, with the multiple lines of enemies within the story, it makes for twists and turns and that adds variety, yet still the reach for that ultimate goal.

Summary

The fans waited for the next installment to the Final Fantasy series, but was it worth it? The FF franchise is acclaimed, and it delivered. Not to mention the release of the first direct sequel to a Final Fantasy game. What more could you ask for besides a sweetly designed battle system, deeply intriguing story and cast of characters set into a beautiful world. You be the judge and try for yourself, at least with a rental. SL
