Sonic Heroes (15/02/2004)
Options: (Print) (Send)
After the Dreamcast, can Sega stay alive? Not like this...

Graphics

The graphics in Sonic Heroes aren’t that much different to those of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn’t push the Xbox to its visual limits...

The camera angle in Sonic Heroes is terrible, to put it simply, it often swings wildly out of control making it impossible to see where you are heading; sometimes the camera even gets stuck inside objects such as blocks etc. because of the poor game development code to stop the camera going through solid objects. The overall graphics give the characters, both new and old, an overall shiny feel, but as I said earlier, they were pretty much the same quality like the Dreamcast versions had.

Sound

The music is an important aspect of Sonic Heroes; pumping up and making you ready for the next stage or boss battle. The voice acting has been casted well as each of the characters' voices blend well with the character they are supposed to be. The music in Sonic Heroes works with the levels and the surroundings you are in. The best sounds in the game by far are the jumping noises, running and flying sounds which give the game that extra sense of realism.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Sonic Heroes isn’t exactly varied. Basically, you are given a destination to go to and you have to fly, run or smash your way though to get there. The game uses a strange team system where you play as three characters at once, but only controlling the leader of the team, depending on which “formation” you're using, you will take different paths throughout the levels. This system can be good, but can also be extremely confusing and frustrating.

There are four different teams of three; The Sonic Team; The Dark Team; The Rose Team and The Chatix Team. Each having their own different difficulties and missions.

Story

Sonic Team: Sonic is cruising though a canyon when Tails and Knuckles come in their plane to tell him that Eggman (or Dr. Robotnick as fans of the series will remember) is once again trying to concur the world, and Sonic Team have to save the world and destroy Eggman.

Rose Team: Amy and her friends are on a mission to find Sonic who they believe has nicked Froggy and Amy’s Choa, Choaloa.

Summary

Overall, a tad disappointing and not much different for Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 - the graphics, gameplay and sounds are pretty much the same. The only new thing in this game are the missions. So this game is for mainly people new to the series as it is similar to previous games. SP

Dark Team: The Dark team, Eggman’s henchmen have discovered that Sonic and company are trying to foil their plans its up to them to stop Sonic.
