Outrun 2 (22/06/2004)
Options: (Print) (Send)
Sega's classic racing franchise returns.

When gamers have mentioned what Sega classics they wanted to see revived, Outrun would often make their list.  A couple of months ago, the sequel to the hit series was released in arcade, with no sign of a console version coming out. Now, thanks to Microsoft and Sumo Digital, Outrun 2 will now make an appearance on the Xbox.

One of the first things you notice when you look at Outrun 2 in motion is that not only is it gorgeous, but it also has an amazing sense of speed.  When the in-game car is pushing speeds of over 200 MPH, you really feel like you are going that fast.  The detail in the game also looks great, with grass being flung into the air as you drive over it at insane speeds.  The Xbox version looks just as good as its arcade counterpart, and there is no sign of slowdown.

The game’s soundtrack seems like it will fit the fast moving driving of the game. All the sounds also seem authentic, from the car skidding along the road to doing a power slide down a winding turn. Overall, it seems like the soundtrack and sound effects will fit the game perfectly.

Outrun has always been an arcade racing series, and Outrun 2 will continue this tradition.  Although it looks like there may be no vehicle damage in the game, the sense of speed and the blistering turns look like they will make you forget all about that.  This port of Outrun 2 will include all of the modes that were in the arcade version, as well as some new modes.  Since Microsoft is publishing the game, head to head competition on Xbox Live will be included.  But don’t expect the game to be lacking in depth.  Despite its arcade origins, the Xbox port will include a Mission Mode and Time Trials, as well as numerous unlockables.  This along with Xbox Live support should make Outrun 2 a worthy contender in the racing genre.

While the arcade version was made by Sega-AM2, the Xbox port is being handled by Sumo Digital Ltd. for Sega.  Based on the video shown at E3 though, it looks like the company is doing a fine job. Outrun 2 will be out in October, so get ready to race.
