Fable (29/04/2004)

Peter Molyneux’s ambitious RPG is coming together nicely.

Fable has been in development for a very long time. Shown early in the Xbox’s life, it is still being worked on, but finally nearing completion.

Originally known as Project Ego, Fable is another one of Peter Molyneux’s ambitious projects. It is an action-RPG, but not your standard one. In Fable, you make the decisions and decide what and who you want to be. Every action you take will affect the future.

The game looks gorgeous. One thing that’s been clear since the beginning of the project is that Fable will be one of the most beautiful Xbox games to date. Huge and detailed environments, along with gorgeous character models and effects make Fable a stunning game to look at.

The game looks like it will play out like your standard action-RPG (in terms of combat and casting spells etc), but the differences will be in the other ways you can react. You will have many choices when interacting with townsfolk for example, whether it be kindly or rudely. But remember, whatever action you take will affect how that person reacts to you in the future.

Although multiplayer has been cut from Fable (due to time constraints), the single player game looks meaty enough to satisfy any major RPG fan. But with all the ideas being put into the game, will it stagger under its own weight? Could the project perhaps be too ambitious? That remains to be seen until we are able to play it. Fable is currently scheduled for release this summer. CD
