US PSP: $250 on 24th March (03/02/2005)

The wait is finally over for the Americans.

This just in: Sony Computer Entertainment America has officially revealed the launch details for the much-awaited PlayStation Portable in North America.

The PSP is out in North America on the 24th March for an RRP of $249 USD. Considering the Nintendo DS retails for $100 less, we’ll admit it’s a tad pricier than we expected!

Similar to Japan, SCEA plans to release the PSP in a Value Pack bundle that contains a 2 MB Memory Stick Duo, headphones with remote control, battery pack, AC adaptor, soft case and cleaning cloth and a UMD disc with various non-interactive game demos. No word whether a cheaper standalone version of the PSP will be released.

"PSP will evolve and elevate portable entertainment, giving users the freedom to play full 3D games, watch movies, listen to music and connect wirelessly on their terms, their time and their place," said Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive officer, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. "More than ever, today's consumer demands access to entertainment outside the home without compromising quality. With more than 100 PSP game titles currently in development worldwide, and the ability to download and listen to digital music and view feature films with breathtaking screen quality, PSP lets users control their entertainment options, all in one package."

A similar announcement specifying the UK launch details for the PSP is expected within the next few weeks.
