SCEE finally announces a release date and price for the long-awaited handheld.

It’s the news we’ve all been waiting for: SCEE has announced that the PlayStation Portable will hit European PAL territories on the 1st September 2005 for €249 (£179).

Similar to the North American launch, the PSP will only be available as a Value Pack in Europe. The PSP Value Pack contains the PSP itself and a number of accessories, including a pouch, 32MB Memory Stick Duo, battery pack, headphones with remote control, AC adaptor, wrist strap, sampler UMD and a cleaning cloth. A free copy of the Spider-Man 2 film on UMD Video will also be available for those who register their unit at http://www.yourpsp.com.

"PlayStation Portable will revolutionise portable entertainment, giving users the freedom to play full 3D games, watch movies, listen to music and connect wirelessly on their terms, wherever and whenever they wish to do so," said David Reeves, President of SCEE.

Sony hasn’t given any clues as to what games will be present at launch, but we expect to see some of the previously released US launch titles as well as SCEE-developed titles such as MediEvil Resurrection and Wipeout Pure filling up the shelves in September. More details soon.
