Ignition unveils Archer Maclean's Mercury (23/11/2004)

No planets or thermometers here, just Mercury Manipulating Madness!
Just because the Playstation Portable has one single screen and no stylus does not mean it will be devoid of innovation. Whilst this innovation is limited somewhat it seems Mercury has broken the mould and looks set to be the first truly unique game to flow onto the PSP.

Mercery is another one of those incredably addictive and unique puzzlers which almost anyone could pick up and play. The object of the game is to tilt the play area in order to manoeuvre the blobs of mercury around various switches, platforms, obstacles and hazards to ultimately reach the level goals.

Typically these sort of tilt games involve a solid metal ball, but with the flowing liquid mercury to deal with a whole new level of challenge is added which should have you tearing out your hair in no time. Puzzle elements vary from needing to split the mercury into several coloured component parts – each of which will be affected by the degree of tilt – in order to open gates, activate switches, and overcome various obsticles. A degree of lateral thinking is required to navigate the maze-like environments, and you will often hit yourself when you discover the solutions.

"Without exception, everyone who has seen the early versions of Mercury behind the scenes has immediately loved it," reveals Archer Maclean, Awesome Studios. "It's an incredible game which will define a new genre. Coding it to run this fast has been staggeringly complicated, yet the results are hugely impressive. We're delighted to be able to work with Sony Computer Entertainment in making this a PSP launch title. It's just perfect for the format."

Mercury will be published by Ignition Entertainment as a PSP launch title and further versions of the game will surely follow.
