Nintendo DS: Hands-on review (29/11/2004)

Review of the new Nintendo handheld, the Nintendo DS.

Last week the industry’s good and the great (oh and some lucky journos) gathered together in London for the unveiling of the Nintendo DS to UK eyes. Nintendo’s David Gosen was there to talk the select crowd through the DS’s capabilities, and attempted to show us his gaming skills on some of the consoles earliest titles – Mario 64 DS and Metroid Prime Hunters.

Unfortunately there was no confirmation or new news on the UK’s release date or price, as the crowd was told it was ‘still in line for its Q1 2005 release and more exact information would be announced in the new year’.

After a not so news-filled press conference, the crowd was ushered into another area in order to get what they really came for: hands on time with the DS. Lovely ladies milled around the rooms with plush pillows holding DS’s, allowing journos and bigwigs alike the opportunity to try out PictoChat, Mario and Metroid. Much fun was had and the console looks very promising. It’s sleek, sexy and easy to come to terms with using the stylus, but its only downfall if any, may be its size. Compared to the Game Boy Advance SP, it’s pretty large and you may find it takes a while to get to grips with (pun intended). However, great graphics and gameplay from two of the titles alone makes us eager for the DS to finally hit UK shores. Roll on Spring 2005… KA
