It's not everyday I stick a controller on my Christmas list, they are hardly the most exciting things around. You have a stick, a few buttons, a few more buttons and if you're lucky some kind of added feature that doesn't actually work. So why on earth would someone like me ask for a controller for Christmas?
It's simple, like I told my Mum in the shop: "This ain't no ordinary controller, this is a Wavebird". Okay she didn't understand a word I was saying but she’s nice and so bought me it, how kind. You see, the Wavebird is a controller which has one of those added features, like mentioned above, which does actually work. No it's not a Turbo button we've seen all too much of before and it's not a 3rd party rip off of the consoles original controller. Instead it is made by Nintendo and is exactly the same as the Official controller but has no wires.
Yep, those damn wires on GameCube controllers have now been cut off. When I first recieved my GameCube the wires annoyed me, each time I would have to place my console on the floor so it would reach the sofa.
The Wavebird comes in a simple but stylish grey/white/silver colour (take a look at the picture below for a more accuracy). Personally I prefer this colour to the Purple and Black as it's the closest I can get to Platinum for now. The only thing you'll notice different about the pad is a added bit at the bottom which doesn't get in the way at all. It's just got the On/Off switch on.
The Wavebird takes Batteries, two AA's to be precise. They last a while though, the ones which came packaged I still have in today and I've played a fair few hours since I received my Wavebird at Christmas. Run out and the pad will warn you with the power light changing colour. The only downside to the pad is that the Rumble feature is not available due to technical reasons and you may have to change the channel on the Transmitter to get a signal at the start of use sometimes.
I liked my controllers rumbling, but now it doesn’t bother me as the Wavebird is cool like that. No wires, no fuss, just pure gaming which can work a treat in Multiplayer. A situation which happened after Christmas saw me and other family members gathering around the GameCube in a spot of Monkey Ball action. No need to pass the controller, instead we threw it to each other. The pad worked with Uncles standing near the Dining room table and elsewhere around the room.
If you ever need an excuse to buy a controller get a Wavebird and you won't regret it. If I saw this kind of thing a few years back I would of thought I'd been living in the Space age. A great invention. Here's to more wireless stuff. JS
