Review: The Complete Guide to Game Development (12/05/2005)
Options: (Print) (Send)
All you ever wanted to know about game development!

The world of videogame development is constantly changing. Development costs are slowly reaching the heights of Hollywood movie productions and team sizes have nearly quadrupled – and they’re expected to be even bigger in the coming years. Furthermore, the revenues of a successful videogame are often just as massive as the development costs. With the Complete Guide to Game Development, you’ll know all it takes to create a videogame these days.

The first chapter of the book offers a brief yet interesting explanation as to how game design had evolved throughout gaming history, while the following chapters thoroughly explain various phases in each of the three development stages of creating a videogame – preproduction, production and postproduction. In each chapter, you’ll also find a number of Q&A interviews with gaming industry veterans such as Sam Coates and Tim Sweeney.

As with nearly all of the ILEX Press books available the overall presentation of the book is superb. Upon flipping through the first few pages I was amazed at how gorgeous the illustrations and screenshots are. The screenshots in particular provide an interesting look at some of the games I’ve never played before.

Overall, The Complete Guide to Game Development is a must-read if you’re interested in learning about the process of creating videogames or even if you fancy getting a job in the industry. It’s a pleasure to read, looks gorgeous and costs a little under £20 per copy.

The Complete Guide to Game Development is now available for purchase on the official ILEX Press website at http://www.ilex-press.com.
